Summer enrollment at Eastern Gateway Community College jumped 19 percent, compared to 2009.
The new enrollment record was announced during the Board of Trustees July meeting in Canfield. Nearly 1,100 students are taking classes this summer with about half of the students taking at least one online class, said Patty Sturch, dean of enrollment management.
The college saw significant increases in enrollment in its expanded service district of Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties. There was a 200 percent increase from 2009 to summer 2010. This summer 273 students are enrolled, compared to 91 last summer. Additionally, 26 residents from the three counties are taking classes through Eastern Gateway’s partner, Lorain County Community College. The grand total is 299.
Enrollment of Jefferson County residents also increased this summer, she said. “That enrollment climbed by 9 percent to 580 students.” The students are taking a total of 6,698 credits at Eastern Gateway. “This represents a 26 percent increase compared to last year. In addition to our headcount growth, students are taking more classes,” Sturch said.
The board adopted the fiscal year 2011 budget at $17,711,716. The budget is based on the large summer enrollment increase as well as projected growth of 5 percent in the fall and spring semesters.
In other action, new mission and vision statements as well as the 2010-2015 strategic plan were adopted. The mission reads that the college “serves to advance the ability of residents, workers, and companies to learn, grow, and prosper into the future through affordable and accessible education fostered by strong community and educational partnerships.”
