Established in 2007, Eastern Gateway Community College’s TRiO Upward Bound program is designed to provide students in grades 9-12 with the skills and motivation they need in order to succeed in high school and prepare for success in college. The program is one of more than 900 similar programs across the country today and is funded by the United States Department of Education. Upward Bound students receive a variety of beneficial services, including a six week long summer academy at the Jefferson County campus of Eastern Gateway, tours of numerous college campuses, field trips for educational and cultural enrichment, career exploration, Ohio Graduation Test and ACT preparation, study skills workshops, college application and ACT/SAT fee waivers, help with financial aid and scholarship applications, academic and personal guidance, tutoring, parent/guardian workshops, college preparation workshops, and many others. All of Upward Bound’s services are free of charge. Students who attend activities regularly and actively participate also receive a stipend check of up to $40 per month during the school year and up to $60 per month during the summer.
How Upward Bound Works
Based at the Jefferson County Campus of Eastern Gateway Community College in Steubenville, Upward Bound works with designated target schools (Buckeye Local, Edison, Indian Creek, and Steubenville), community organizations, area businesses and industries, and other partners to provide academic and cultural enrichment activities, academic support services, and individual counseling and guidance for students in grades 9-12. The main goal of the program is to prepare students for success in college. As a result, most of the program’s efforts focus on preparing students to enroll at colleges and universities after high school.
