Eastern Gateway Community College offers several scholarships. Eligibility is based on academic excellence and personal achievement. Financial need is considered as an underlying factor. Applications for scholarships are taken each spring through March 1 unless an earlier date is specified. The amounts are subject to change.
Alumni Scholarships - $500, full-time only
Four $500 scholarships will be offered to full-time Eastern Gateway Community College students who are in the last year of study. It is based upon student involvement, academic performance, and financial need. Applicants should submit an essay detailing their achievements and goals along with the scholarship application.
Douglas and Betty Applegate Scholarship - $1,000, full-time only
The Jefferson County resident must complete 12 semester hours or more at EGCC with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. The applicant should have the ultimate goal of pursuing a degree in the field of political science, government or public administration. The applicant should submit a personal essay detailing why he or she intends to pursue a career in public service, including a brief personal history and information about prior public service. A letter of recommendation from an advisor or faculty member is also required.
Bergholz Community Foundation Scholarship - full-time or part-time
The Bergholz Community Foundation Scholarship was established by the Bergholz Community Foundation in 2005. The goal is to assist residents of the Edison Local School District pursuing higher education, either an associate's degree or certificate at EGCC.
Berkman Scholarship - full-time or part-time
The Berkman Scholarship was established in 2002 by Louis Berkman whose goal is to assist local residents pursuing an associate degree or certificate in higher education at EGCC. The scholarship fund will award a scholarship up to the amount of tuition for an eligible recipient. Any employee or dependent of an employee of Louis Berkman Co. will receive first consideration for the scholarship. If there are no employees or dependents of employees eligible, the scholarship will be available to assist other qualified students.
Blaner Gift in Memory of Barbara Blaner Shields
The $300 gift is designed to assist graduating EGCC students who are pursuing a bachelor’s degree and planning to major in the fields of culinary arts, education, or business. A student graduating in the Associate of Arts or Associate of Science program at EGCC who intends to transfer to a four-year college in one of these fields will be eligible to apply. Applicant must submit acceptance letter from a four-year institution of higher education.
Board of Trustees Academic Scholarship - full-time only
An academic scholarship is offered to a member of the senior class from every Jefferson County high school to attend Eastern Gateway Community College. Eligibility criteria are high school class rank and overall quality point average. Applications are available through the high school guidance office. The scholarship will cover four semesters of tuition and the cost for necessary books per semester.
Civic Service League of Steubenville Scholarship - $250, full-time or part-time
This scholarship is available to any Jefferson County resident who is enrolled at Eastern Gateway Community College. The scholarship is available to new or continuing students and there is no minimum number of credit hours required for eligibility. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.0 grade point average in order to continue receiving the scholarship for the second semester. The recipient must demonstrate outstanding scholarship. The applicant will be required to submit a Eastern Gateway Community College scholarship application, a personal essay describing why the applicant is deserving of the award and a letter of recommendation from a teacher or advisor who is familiar with the applicant’s abilities.
Rev. George Crenshaw Scholarship - $250, full-time or part-time
The student must maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA or above and the student must first apply for all available federal and state financial assistance. Submit an essay about yourself detailing career goals and how you believe your course of study at Eastern Gateway Community College will further those goals. The essay should also include why the student has financial need at this time. A letter of recommendation from a social service agency, instructor, employer or counselor is required.
Arthur J. D'Anniballe Scholarship - full-time or part-time
Founding member of the college, Arthur J. D’Anniballe established this scholarship in 2006. He served on the Board of Trustees for 25 years, 15 of those years as chairman. He is also a founding board member of the EGCC Foundation Inc., on which he continues to serve. His goal is to assist local residents who are pursuing an associate degree or certificate. Recipient must be a graduate of Steubenville or Catholic Central High School. The student must have maintained at least a 2.5 GPA in high school or at EGCC and be enrolled a minimum of 6 credit hours. The scholarship fund will be an endowed, restricted fund in which the interest income only shall be distributed for scholarship use. The scholarship amount will be determined each year based on the estimated amount of the interest income. Students must first apply for all available federal and state funding. If an applicant has received financial aid to cover all costs, the student would be ineligible for the scholarship.
Defenbaugh Scholarship - $700, full-time only
For a second-year, full-time students who are seeking an associate degree. The student must demonstrate academic success at the College with at least 30 semester credit hours achieved. Financial need should be demonstrated. Submit an essay about yourself along with a recommendation from an advisor or faculty member.
Edith Forester Scholarship - $120, full- or part-time
The memorial scholarship in the amount of $120 is for a full- or part-time student accepted in the Practical Nursing Program. Applicants must be Jefferson County residents, have a minimum 3.0 GPA, and have a high school transcript on file. All federal and state aid must be used first to cover costs.
Nina Gentile Scholarship - $500 for two recipients, minimum 6 credit hours
The Gentile Scholarship is to assist residents of Jefferson County pursuing an associate degree of certificate in higher education at EGCC. The applicant must be an incoming freshmen, 2.5 grade point average from an official high school transcript submitted after graduation. Recommendation from an advisor, faculty member or a member of the community who can attest the applicant is able to succeed in College. Submit an essay about yourself stating your career goals, why you feel you are worthy of this scholarship and how you believe the course of study at EGCC will further those goals. Must be pursuing an Associate Degree or Certificate. Applicant must apply and use any Federal and State funding first.
Thomas George Scholarship- $600, full-time or part-time
The Thomas George Scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior of Edison High School. First priority is given to any “heirs at law” of Thomas George. If no George heir applies or are eligible, the recipient may be any other graduate. The student must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5. The recipient will be selected by officials at Edison High School.
Hart Scholarship - $300, full-time or part-time
The Thomas R. and Beth Hart Scholarship was established in 2003. Mr. Hart retired from Jefferson Technical College in 1990 as an associate professor in business technologies. The accounting program was Mr. Hart’s interest and specialty. The Harts’ goal is to assist residents of Jefferson County pursuing an associate degree in accounting technology at EGCC. The scholarship fund will be award a $300 scholarship to an accounting student in his/her last semester of the accounting degree program providing adequate funding is available.
Horizon Grant - full-time only
This tuition grant program is for Jefferson County residents in their pursuit of higher education. The grant provides two years of tuition only for graduates starting their studies at EGCC by the summer or fall following their graduation from state-chartered, public, and private schools, and approval hope school programs. The high school graduate must be a Jefferson County resident and have a cumulative high school GPA of 2.5 or better. The grant will cover tuition charges for credit courses for four successive (excluding summer) semesters of attendance, provided the student enrolls full time, completes the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and provides a final high school transcript. The applicant must apply and use all federal and state financial aid before this grant. The grant does not cover books, supplies, or lab fees.
EGCC Foundation Scholarship - minimum 6 hours
To assist non-traditional students who are ineligible to receive financial assistance. Student must reside in Ohio or Brooke, Hancock, Marshall, Ohio or Wetzell counties in WV. Must submit a recommendation from an advisor, faculty member or a member of the community as well as a one or two paragraph response on the topic “What Achieving a Degree or Certificate Means to Me”. Must apply for all assistance through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
EGCC Leadership Book Stipend
Any student attending or planning to attend EGCC may apply for a book stipend for the first year (two semesters) at the college. The applicants must be a full-time student with at least 12 credit hours per semester and possess the following leadership skills: demonstrate leadership activities in high school or community service organizations, must join and take a leadership role in Student Senate upon acceptance at EGCC, and maintain a 2.5 GPA. The stipend will pay for book charges of the student’s first semester and will not exceed $500 per semester. The second stipend is contingent on how well the participant has fulfilled his/her commitment. The student activities coordinator has application forms.
EGCC Scholarship - minimum of 6 hours
This scholarship was established by the staff and faculty employed at EGCC. The recipient must be pursing an associate or certificate degree. Must have a cumulative GPA of a 3.0 and have completed a minimum of 24 credit hours. An essay must be submitted regarding the applicants career goals and their worthiness of the award. A letter of recommendation from an advisor or faculty member is also required.
EGCC Second Chance Scholarship - full-time or part-time
Aids students who have been determined ineligible to receive federal and/or state financial aid because of their previous academic record. The scholarship is designed to assist students pursuing an associate degree or certificate at the college. Each applicant must apply for all available financial aid first. Write an essay about yourself and attach a recommendation from an advisor or faculty member.
Samuel and Grace H. Johnston Scholarships - $1,200 (see note), full-time
The Samuel and Grace H. Johnston Scholarships are memorial scholarships established by the late Samuel and Grace H. Johnston. Samuel Johnston was a Trustee Emeritus of EGCC. Each scholarship is in the amount of $1,200 and will be awarded to students enrolled in the Engineering or Computer Science programs at EGCC. Applicants must be working toward an associate degree and enrolled on a full-time basis. Students must also have a minimum grade point average of 3.00 if matriculating from high school or EGCC. Priority for these scholarships will be given to incoming first time students. NOTE: Possibility for more than one recipient. If all costs are covered under these funds the student is ineligible for this scholarship.
McClellan Trust Fund - $750, full-time or part-time
THE APPLICANT MUST SHOW ACADEMIC SUCCESS FROM COLLEGE OR HIGH SCHOOL WITH A 2.750 CUMULATIVE GPA. The student must be pursuing an associate degree or certificate and demonstrate financial need. Submit an essay about yourself and attach a letter of recommendation from an advisor or faculty member. Three recipients will be selected.
Nick A. Mougianis Memorial Scholarship
The Nick A. Mougianis Memorial Scholarship was established in honor of Mr. Mougianis who served on the EGCC Board of Trustees for 15 years and who served as board chairman for nine of those years. Mr. Mougianis was an insurance executive with Nationwide Insurance and his family and his fellow insurance professionals established the scholarship. The recipient must be pursuing an associate degree or certificate and must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or better. A student is not eligible if (s)he has adequate funds from financial aid to cover all tuition, fees and book costs.
Helen L. And James F. Murray Scholarship - $500, full-time or part-time
This scholarship was established in loving memory of his wife, Helen Louise Poindexter Murray. The recipient must be a graduate from Steubenville High School and pursuing as associate degree at EGCC. Must have a minimum 2.0 GPA, submit a recommendation from an advisor, faculty member or a member of the community who is familiar with your qualifications, submit a letter regarding your career goals and submit an application to enroll at EGCC.
Naylor Scholarship - part time only
The student must show academic success with at least 25 credits achieved. The student should be in pursuit of an associate degree with involvement in activities within and outside college. Financial need should be demonstrated. Submit an essay about yourself with a recommendation from an advisor or faculty member.
Ohio Valley Panhellenic Scholarship - part-time
The Ohio Valley Panhellenic Scholarship was established by the Ohio Valley Panhellenic Association. The scholarship is designed to assist non-traditional, part-time students pursuing an Associate degree or Certificate at the college. The applicant must have completed at least six semester hours with a 2.5 or higher cumulative grade point average. A recommendation from an advisor, faculty member or a member of the community is required. Additionally, the student must submit an essay detailing his/her future goals, apply for all available financial aid and be a Jefferson County Resident.
Project BEST Scholarship - full-time or part-time
The Project BEST Scholarship Fund was established by the Board of Directors of Project BEST, a construction industry labor-management cooperative committee. Any employee or dependent child of a participating contractor and/or participating construction trade union who plans to enter EGCC to pursue an associate degree is eligible to apply. Submit an essay about yourself and a recommendation from an advisor, faculty member, counselor, teacher or employer. An employment verification form is required. These forms are available from Project BEST or any participating contractor or labor union.
EGCC Senior Citizens Scholarship
Ohio residents over 60 may enroll for regular credit courses at EGCC and not be required to pay tuition. The scholarship does not cover books, supplies, application or lab fees. Residents may enroll in credit courses on a space available basis provided they meet all prerequisites for the course.
Steven E. Strupe Memorial Scholarship - full-time or part-time
The Steven E. Strupe Memorial Scholarship was established by the family and friends of Steven E. Strupe in 2005. The goal is to assist graduates of Buckeye Local School District who exemplify the ideals Steven Strupe represented. The scholarship is designed to assist students pursing an associate's degree or certificate in engineering technologies at EGCC.
W. Hunter Vaughan, M.D. Scholarship - full-time or part-time
The W. Hunter Vaughan, M.D. Scholarship was established by Dr. Vaughan to assist local residents who are pursuing an associate of applied science degree in radiologic technology at EGCC. Appliants must have a 3.0 GPA or better.
Upper Ohio Valley Grant - full-time only
EGCC has established a tuition grant program for Jefferson County high school graduates. Grants for the coming academic year will be awarded to residents from the Upper Ohio Valley counties boarding Jefferson County and West Virginia reciprocity counties, who graduate from a Jefferson County high school or have successfully completed a program offered by the Jefferson County Joint Vocational School and enter EGCC in the summer or fall immediately following high school graduation. Recipients must have a cumulative high school GPA of 2.5 or better. The grant covers tuition charges for credit courses for four successive semesters of attendance (excluding summer) semesters of attendance, provided the student enrolls full time, completes the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and provides a final high school transcript. The applicant must apply and use all federal and state financial aid before this grant. The grant does not cover books, supplies, or lab fees.
Priority will be given to applications received by March 1 each year, but applications will be accepted until scholarships are awarded.
